In a surprising move, Ghana’s outgoing president, Nana Akufo-Addo, has publicly expressed his support for former president John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming presidential election.
The statement came during a church service captured in a UTV video posted on Facebook, where Akufo-Addo was addressing a congregation as the nation prepares for a highly anticipated election this Saturday.

While praying for peace and the integrity of the electoral process, Akufo-Addo made an unexpected comment that caught many off guard.
In his address, he not only urged the nation to maintain peace but also expressed his hope that Mahama would emerge victorious. “I pray that the elections go smoothly, reflecting the strength of our democracy,” Akufo-Addo said. “And I believe that, in the end, the entire country will rally behind John Mahama. He will be the one who leads us.”
His comments were met with surprise, given the context of his presidency and the fact that Mahama is the main rival of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP the election.
Akufo-Addo’s remarks came just days before the polls, fueling speculation about the political dynamics of the election, especially considering that he is completing his second term and would not be eligible for re-election.

The video of the prayer session quickly circulated on social media, sparking a mixture of reactions.
Supporters of Mahama saw it as a powerful endorsement from the sitting president, while others viewed it as an unusual move given the context of the ongoing political rivalry between Akufo-Addo’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Mahama’s NDC.
