Akufo-Addo Orders Suspension Of Electricity Export To Curtail ‘Dumsor’ – Atta Akyea Reveals

President Akufo-Addo has taken a significant step to address the frequent power outages, commonly known as dumsor, by issuing a directive to halt the exportation of electricity to neighbouring countries like Togo, Benin and other West African countries.

This directive was revealed by Samuel Atta Akyea who happens to be the Chairman of the Energy Committee of Parliament when he was interviewed by Evans Mensah on JoyNews.

The move, according to Atta Akyea demonstrates the President’s emphasis on fulfilling domestic energy needs rather than prioritizing potential profits from electricity exports.

Mr. Atta Akyea emphasized the President’s dedication to resolving the ongoing instability in the country’s power supply.

“The President has a sense of the national need rather than making profits abroad,” he stated.

According to Mr Atta Akyea, the instruction is anticipated to be promptly executed, with instant actions taken to redirect electricity produced for export back into the domestic grid.

“We cannot afford to say “Okay, let’s make good money abroad and let the national economy suffer.” So in the meantime, whatever is going outside would be curtailed and fed on the national grid so that we have electricity,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) during the Easter period, officially stated that there will be no more dumsor going forward, assuring of stable national power supply in an official post shared online.

The power distribution company highlighted in a post on X that any sudden power outages could be due to localized faults. The company encourages individuals facing power issues to contact their service center for assistance.

See below for full statement;

The Electricity Company of Ghana wishes to inform our cherished customers and the general public that we have a stable national power supply (stable national grid).

Any customer who is currently experiencing power outage is due to a localised fault. Please call our contact centre on 0302 611611 (also available on whatsapp) or report on our social media handles (ECGghOfficial) for immediate action to fix the outage and restore power supply.
