Akua Donkor, the trailblazing founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra. However, specific details surrounding her death remain undisclosed.
Known for her charismatic and determined spirit, Donkor carved a notable place in Ghanaian politics, passionately advocating for the rights of the rural poor and marginalized. She often challenged traditional political norms, bringing bold, unique ideas to the national stage.

Born in February 1952 in the Afigya Kwabre District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, Donkor grew up working as a cocoa farmer. Despite lacking formal education, she transitioned into public service and eventually became an assemblywoman in Herman. Her modest background and experience in agriculture fueled her lifelong commitment to rural community issues.

In 2012, Donkor founded the Ghana Freedom Party with the ambitious goal of becoming Ghana’s first female president. Although she faced challenges, including repeated disqualification by the Electoral Commission, her outspoken style and unwavering commitment drew widespread attention.

Throughout her political journey, Akua Donkor championed farmers’ welfare, criticized policies she felt neglected small-scale agriculture, and promoted women’s rights. Her campaign promises included free education, the elimination of import taxes, and the creation of a free trade zone at Tema Port.
