Akosombo Dam Spillage: Over 300 Bodies Transferred To Other Mortuaries

South Tongu MP Kobla Mensah Woyome has spoken of how a local mortuary was forced to relocate more than 300 bodies to other locations.

He explained that this was due to the flooding that had affected the area as a result of the Akosombo Dam’s spillage.

The Member of Parliament for South Tongu, Korbla Woyome, stated that they had to move bodies from a mortuary to other facilities at one point to prevent a greater disaster on October 25, 2023.

“We are currently at the Comboni Polyclinic Mortuary… It was one of the places we had to work at in the early stages because the flood water had flooded the area, and this is a mortuary, so what we had to do was move about 300 dead bodies – our brothers and sisters who are no more, to other facilities,” as quoted by GhanaWeb.

After both the Akosombo and Kpong dams in the Eastern Region experienced significant increases in water levels due to recent rainfall, the VRA began spilling water from the dams on September 15, 2023.

Power outages took place in all of the communities located along the lower Volta Basin after the spillage affected nine districts. Asuogyaman, North Tongu, South Tongu, Ada West, Ada East, Keta, Anlo, Shai Osudoku, and Central Tongu are among the affected communities.

An estimated 26,000 individuals have been forced to seek refuge elsewhere due to the spillage. As a result of flooding, the GRIDCo sub-station in Fievie, Sogakope, in the Volta Region, had to be shut down.
