The North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said clearly that the minority will not back down from its opposition to making the Ghana Card the sole obligatory ID for voter registration.

Okudzeto Ablakwa voiced out his concern In a Facebook post available to Tru News Report, about how the government would acquire funds for the release of fresh Ghana Cards, given that it has failed to meet a number of its financial obligations.

“A government unable to pay bondholders, unable to provide furniture for 2.3million pupils, unable to address SHS congestion, unable to clear NaBCo arrears & unable to fulfils promises to COVID front-liners is suddenly giving Ghana Card assurances worth a staggering GHS1.4billion”.

“When will some politicians learn that delivering on the people’s needs & real expectations are the only saving grace & that unscrupulous mafia electoral manipulation doesn’t work? The NDC Caucus in Parliament means every word when we say: there shall be no new Cl” he said.

Ken Ofori-Atta, the country’s minister of finance, has already assured the public that an agreement has been reached with CalBank for a GH&100 million facility to secure the release of over 3 million Ghana Cards now held in bonded warehouses.

The minister made the promise after the National IDentificaiton Authority said that “It owing a private company about GH100 million for the supply of blank cards, because of that the company has refused to give the Ghana Cards to the NIA unless the debt was paid in full“.

Speaking to Parliament on Tuesday, Mr. Ofori-Atta said, “We have agreed to a GH100 million facility to ensure that the 3.2 million cards are released. GH80 million has been deposited, and the remaining GH20 million would be paid by this evening.”

Electoral Commission Chairwoman Jean Mensa has defended the EC’s effort to make the Ghana Card the sole identifying document for voter registration prior to the 2024 elections.

Madam Jean Mensa told Parliament about the proposed constitutional instrument for the next general elections. She said the C.I. intends to promote continuous voter registration and will permit year-round registration of eligible voters at its district offices.
