Ablakwa Explains Why He Kicked Court Papers

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a member of parliament for North Tongu, has finally explained why, in February, he kicked fake court documents that were supposedly delivered to him by a bailiff.

The plaintiff, Victor Kusi Boateng, took the MP to court because of his behaviour, which Boateng interpreted as an insult to the justice system.

Last Monday, the judge, who had been considering a contempt case in which Ablakwa was the sole defendant, dismissed the case and awarded him costs of 10,000 cedis.

Ablakwa has provided an explanation for the viral video showing him kicking court documents when they were given to him at the offices of Metro TV in Accra. On the May 5 episode of Good Morning Ghana, co-panellist Nana Akomea asked him why he did what he did in February of this year.

“I was extremely provoked,” Ablakwa said. “I was asking the gentleman, ‘Who are you?’ and he wouldn’t tell me.” When I ask him what documents he’s referring to, he just answers, “I have documents for you,’ I say which documents?’ Just let me know, and then he throw it at me.

“So, I lost my cool… Honestly, that is not me. It was an unfortunate incident. but I felt so disrespected. I was driving myself, and I thought I could just kick it out of my way and go away,” he added.

He also emphasised that the plaintiff had been unable to produce proof of service when the judge had requested it because the purported bailiff had not been registered with the court and his lawyers had discovered this.
