A Plus Shares Eye-Opening Experience as MP, Explains the Need for Sirens

In a candid revelation during an interview on Joy FM, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, shared his newfound appreciation for the challenges of Members of Parliament (MPs).

His experience as the MP for Gomoa Central has shifted his perspective on issues he previously criticized, particularly the use of sirens by MPs.

Reflecting on a hectic day, A Plus recounted a moment that changed his view on this controversial topic.

“It is not an easy task at all. Today, for instance, I was with the President in my constituency. The Ahmadiyya Muslim community had their annual convention in Gomoa Pomadze. I had to be at the convention and in Parliament at the same time,” he explained.

He detailed how juggling responsibilities as an MP requires swift movement, often hindered by Ghana’s infamous traffic. A Plus, who once criticized MPs’ demand for sirens to navigate through traffic, found himself in a similar bind.

“I remember that before I entered Parliament, I was complaining about MPs and why they wanted sirens. I called my friend, who is a dispatch rider, and said, ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I am at my place.’ I said, ‘Please, I need you to take me out of this traffic and get me to the constituency now and bring me back to Parliament.’”

His words painted a vivid picture of the logistical challenges MPs face, especially when their constituencies are far from the capital.

“Can you imagine someone whose constituency is in, say, Paga, and you have to go there with the President and then come back to Parliament? It’s hectic,” he admitted.

This firsthand experience, he noted, has made him empathize with the reasoning behind MPs’ advocacy for sirens. “I came to understand why they were asking for them,” he said, acknowledging that his previous stance may have been uninformed.

“I think that I am in a position to explain what happens in Parliament and what parliamentarians go through very well to the public.”
