75th Emmy Awards Ceremony Postponed

The 75th Emmy Awards is not expected to take place on September 18, as originally scheduled. Variety claims that due to the Hollywood strikes, the ceremony’s vendors, producers, and other participants have been informed of a postponement.

On July 12th, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) called for a strike, but the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences had already published its candidates for the 2023 awards. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been on strike since May. Both unions want higher streaming residuals and more rights around the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Although the Television Academy has not yet announced that the Emmys will be postponed, there will likely be few people in attendance regardless. Actors and authors are forbidden by the terms of the strikes from attending or accepting awards for the struck works. In addition, unionised actors cannot host or present for the programme, nor can writers create scripts.

“Like the rest of the industry, we hope there will be an equitable and timely resolution for all parties in the current guild negotiations,” the Television Academy said in a statement to Deadline last week. “We continue to monitor the situation closely with our partners at Fox and will advise if and when there is an update available.”

The Emmys haven’t been delayed since 2001, so this is a first. Due to the tragic events of September 11, the Television Academy decided to move the ceremony to November. Variety claims that even with the likely delay, the second round of award voting will still take place on August 17th.

According to Variety, the Television Academy is pushing for a November date in 2024, while Fox, the network showing the 2023 Emmys, is targeting January. However, because there appears to be no end in sight to the strikes and the major Hollywood producers are not budging, it seems unlikely that the Emmys will be held this year.
