52 People Arrested In Accra West For Making Illegal Electrical Connections

A total of 52 customers were found to be using illegal connection practices by the Accra West Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd.

Revenue Protection Manager for ECG’s Accra West Region, Dr Mark Owusu Ansah, has stated that customers who engage in illegal activities are not paying for the electricity they consume, costing the company revenue. Violations include meter bypassing, tampering with meters, and making direct connections.

He claimed that consumers were caught and arrested within the first ten days of the company’s continuing exercise to recover all debts owed to it and to monitor the condition of its meter installations.

According to the company’s data, the consumers illegally consumed roughly 550,000 kWh of power, which is about GHc750,000 (plus taxes and administrative charges), as stated by Dr Ansah.

“Power to these customers has been disconnected, they have been surcharged for the electricity they used without paying and charged a penalty fee for engaging in the illegalities. Also, depending on the gravity of the offense, we will hand some cases over to the police for prosecution, ” he said.

He commended the hard work of the field team for discovering the illegal activities and stated that the sophistication of the crimes revealed indicates a resolve on the part of some customers to deny the Company revenue from the electricity used by those customers.

According to Dr Ansah, ECG employees have been conducting an initiative to collect overdue payments from all customers and conduct an audit of the Company’s metre installations since March 20, 2023.

ECG Accra West’s General Manager, Mr. Emmanuel Akinie, has stated that the company is spending extensively in technology to help identify consumers who have engaged in unlawful activities.

“We have introduced some smart meter solutions on pilot basis, which give us real-time updates of what is happening on a customer premises. It signals our office once the meter-case is opened, bypassed or tampered with,” he said.

Mr. Akinie stated that there are plans to implement more of these smart metres to aid in the fight against illegalities.
