50 Cent Wins $1 Billion Lawsuit Over ‘Power’ TV Series

In a landmark legal victory, rapper and entrepreneur 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, has won a $1 billion lawsuit against former drug kingpin Cory “Ghost” Holland. The dispute revolved around Jackson’s hit TV series “Power,” with Holland alleging that the show’s plot was lifted directly from his own life experiences.

“Power,” which has become a cultural phenomenon since its debut, chronicles the double life of James “Ghost” St. Patrick, a successful nightclub owner who is also a major player in New York City’s drug trade. The series, known for its themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the pursuit of power, has significantly boosted Jackson’s profile from a music mogul to a multi-media powerhouse.

Holland filed the lawsuit in 2021, claiming that the show’s co-creator Courtney Kemp, STARZ, Jackson, and Lionsgate had stolen his life story, which he detailed in a 2007 CD titled “Blasphemy.” According to Holland, this CD was sent to Kemp’s father in hopes of finding a way out of the drug trade. However, Judge Analisa Torres ruled in favor of Jackson, stating that “Power” does not mention Holland by name and that the show’s storylines were coincidental, thus dismissing the defamation claim.

In addition to the primary lawsuit, Holland also filed another suit accusing Jackson and his associates of harassment. Holland alleged that they intimidated him by playing a song loudly near his home. However, Judge Torres dismissed this claim as well, ruling that there was no evidence of a credible threat or imminent harmful contact.
