5 Revelations from Gloria Sarfo’s Criticism of AMAA Organizers

In an outburst captured in a video that has caught significant attention, Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo expressed her displeasure with the organizers of The Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) and The AMA Awards.

Through a heartfelt video, she shared her criticisms and recounted the unfair treatment she and other Ghanaian filmmakers endured during the event. Here are five takeaways from the video she shared;

1. I Received a Fake Flight Ticket: Gloria shared a shocking revelation about her journey to the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in Nigeria. According to her, she was provided with a fake flight ticket, leading to her being denied boarding at the airport. This unexpected hurdle not only delayed her travels but also set the tone for the frustrating series of events that followed.

2. Fellow Stars Stranded at the Airport: The ordeal did not end with her. Gloria recounted the distressing experiences of fellow Ghanaian stars, such as veteran actress Akofa Edjeani Asiedu and filmmaker Abdul Salam Mumuni. They found themselves stranded at the airport for hours, uninformed and bewildered. This was a stark contrast to the promises of an all-expenses-paid trip, leaving them to fend for themselves without any clarity or assistance.

3. Sacrifices Made in Vain: Reflecting on the sacrifices she made, Gloria, who once hosted the popular ‘Music Music’ show on TV3, voiced her deep regrets. She missed significant professional engagements, including a movie set, a feature film, a short film, an awards night for which she was nominated, and a movie premiere. All these sacrifices were made in vain, culminating in what she described as a humiliating experience at the AMAA ceremony.

4. Nigerian Actors Receive Preferential Treatment: Adding to her grievances, Gloria highlighted a glaring disparity in how Ghanaian and Nigerian actors are treated at such events. She pointed out that when Nigerian actors visit Ghana for film shoots or award ceremonies, their specified needs are meticulously met without any issues. This preferential treatment starkly contrasts with the neglect and poor handling she and her colleagues experienced.

5. Integrity of AMAA in Question: Gloria’s revelations have inevitably cast a shadow over the prestigious Africa Movie Academy Awards. The AMAA, known for recognizing and honouring excellence in the African film industry, now faces scrutiny over its management and integrity. The question arises: how can an organization that prides itself on celebrating African cinema allow such mistreatment of its participants?
