2024 TGMA: I Deserve To Win Artiste of The Year- Okyeame Kwame

Okyeame Kwame is confidently looking towards the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, expressing his belief that he is deserving of winning the prestigious Artiste of the Year award.

The veteran rapper previously secured this accolade in 2000 as part of the music duo Akyeame, alongside Quophi Okyeame. Subsequently, Kwame clinched the award as a solo artist in 2009 with his impactful album “Manwensem” (My Poetry).

Following the nomination of his song Insha Allah featuring King Paluta for this year’s awards, Okyeame Kwame emphasized his strong position as a frontrunner for the coveted prize.

Despite facing competition from younger artists like King Paluta, Jay Bahd, and Oseikrom Sikani in the Hiplife Song of the Year category, he remains confident in his chances of emerging victorious.

“It feels really great to be nominated even in my 26th year in music and that tells me that people appreciate what I’m doing. That is not to say that I would have been bothered if I missed out but it encourages me to do more.

“Besides, it is the more reason why I’m working hard to win the ultimate Artiste of the Year award again. It’s a must for me so I need to change the narrative by dropping a massive album, hopefully this year. I will put in more work to achieve the goal,” he said.

In 2009, Okyeame Kwame caused a stir in the Ghanaian music industry when he proclaimed himself as the Best Rapper Alive (B.R.A) in a song, shortly after winning the prestigious Ghana Music Awards Artist of the Year. This declaration ignited a conflict with fellow Ghanaian rapper Obrafour, who believed he was more deserving of the title.

The ensuing feud between the two artists became one of the most memorable in the history of Ghanaian music. Obrafour even went as far as challenging Okyeame Kwame to a rap battle on the streets, but unfortunately, this challenge was never accepted or acknowledged by Okyeame Kwame.

However, in 2011, Obrafour publicly apologized for his actions, seeking to mend the broken relationship. Okyeame Kwame, on the other hand, explained that he declined Obrafour’s challenge because he believed there was no need for it at the time.

In his view, winning the prestigious Artist of the Year award was already a vindication of his talent and success. Thus, he saw no necessity to engage in a rap battle to prove himself further.
