Famed Ghanaian religious leader, Prophet Kumachacha, whose real name is Nicholas Osei, has announced his plans to contest in the forthcoming presidential elections set for December this year.
In an interview with TV3, the founder and head of Heavens Gate Ministries revealed that he will be running as an independent candidate representing the Kum Peoples Party (KPP), his newly formed party.
He further asserted that although he may not possess the same level of formal education as candidates from the two major political parties, the NPP and NDC, he believes he has the necessary qualities to govern the nation, emphasizing that proficiency in English is not a prerequisite for effective leadership.
“It’s official, I am going independent under the party; KPP (Kum Peoples Party). Someone asked why I was running for president when my command of the English language wasn’t that great.
“But if you look into the constitution, the 3 major requirements to run for president include not being less than 40 years old, not having a criminal record and being of sound mind.
“Look at China with a population of more than 1 billion, they don’t speak English, they speak in their local dialect, but even those who speak good English go there for loans. So it’s not about the English language,” he said.
If elected, he has committed to addressing the persistent issue of high rents that has affected many Ghanaians, vowing to enhance the affordability of housing.
Additionally, he has pledged to reform the criminal justice system by shortening prison sentences for minor offenses and providing employment opportunities for offenders on government-funded farms.
“A lot of emergencies can happen. So if you are being forced to pay 40, 000 in rent, how much would be left for other expenses? Another would be the criminal justice system, people are being jailed for decades for petty crimes like theft. Instead of locking them up, I will employ them in state farms,” he added.
