President Akufo-Addo made reference to the nation’s success in the 2022 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, WASSCE, as proof that his administration’s efforts to improve the country’s educational system had been successful.

He made this point clear when speaking at a speech and reward day for students at Queen Girls Senior High in the Western North region: the WASSCE results from last year are still the best Ghana has achieved since the commencement of the Free Senior High School programme.

“The 2022 WASSCE results are the best out of the last eight years… surely there can no longer be any controversy about the validity of the Free SHS policy and its consequential measures.”

Before this, in December 2022, President Akufo-Addo said that he was proud of how the 2022 WASSCE turned out. He stated that 60.39 percent of students scored A1–C6 in English, compared to 51.6% in 2016. In Integrated Science, he observed that 62.45% of students recorded A1-C6 in 2022, down from 65.70% in 2021 but still an improvement over the 2016 result of 48.35%.

In addition, President Akufo-Addo noted that 61.39 percent of students achieved a score of A1-C6 in mathematics, compared to 33.12 percent in 2016, and that 71.51 percent of students achieved a score of A1-C6 in social studies, rising from 54.55 percent in 2016.

Speaking at Opoku Ware Senior High School’s 70th anniversary celebration, he remarked, “Lest we forget, the 2021 batch of students, who also obtained very commendable results, were the pioneers of the double track system, which elicited a lot of vilification and unfounded criticism on its introduction.”
