A teenager from North Carolina has become a millionaire thanks to a $10 scratch card bought by his sister.
Jalen McLean, 18, intends to use his $1million winnings to purchase an Audi. On May 21, Jalen’s sister, Dasha Silas, bought the Jumbo Bucks ticket on his behalf, and he was ecstatic upon discovering his win. Describing his joy, Silas compared his smile to the character from the movie Venom.
The ticket was purchased from Valero in Fayetteville, and Jalen scratched it in front of his sister that same night. The youngest of five siblings, Jalen promptly turned in his winning ticket to the North Carolina Education Lottery officials and received a portion of his winnings on May 22.
Jalen McLean, 18, secured a $1 million prize after entrusting his sister, Dasha Silas, with money to purchase a scratch card at Valero in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on May 21. Accompanied by family members, McLean claimed a portion of his winnings at the North Carolina Education Lottery headquarters on May 22.
Although Jalen requested his sister to buy him a scratch card, it was Silas who decided to purchase the Jumbo Bucks ticket at Valero on South McPherson Church Road. The Jumbo Bucks tickets were introduced on June 6, 2023, and offer a top prize of $1 million.
As per the North Carolina Education Lottery Website, the objective of the game is to match the scratched numbers with the winning numbers. Ticket holders who uncover a 10X symbol will receive a prize ten times the amount shown.
Jumbo Bucks ticket holders have the opportunity to win between $10 and $1 million, and currently, only two grand prize tickets remain unpurchased in North Carolina.
McLean told North Carolina Education Lottery officials that he feels like “the luckiest guy in the universe.”
“How many 18-year-olds earn something like that?” he added.
The new millionaire had the option of taking home $600,000 or receiving his prize as an annuity of $50,000 for 20 years.
The North Carolina Education Lottery news release confirmed that McLean had decided to elect the annual annuity.
This means the 18-year-old will receive $50,000 each year until his $1 million cash prize is paid in full.
