Thirteen teenagers who are currently pregnant are taking part in the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) within the Nkwanta South Municipality, in the Oti Region.

In the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, the thirteen pregnant teenage females are among the applicants taking the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE). There are a total of 1,982 students from 73 different public and private schools taking the examination at six different locations across the Municipality.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, some of the girls expressed their readiness and determination to take the required examinations to qualify for the free senior high school in Ghana. They said that being pregnant wouldn’t prevent them from continuing their education and that, having learned from their mistakes, nothing would prevent them from completing high school.

Mr. Lawrence Antwi, the test coordinator at Kechiebi Centre, reported to GNA that two female candidates had not shown up for the exam. Nkwanta South Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Bright Kwame Lenwah, pleaded with test supervisors not to damage the system by allowing exam cheating.

He emphasised the importance of the examination as a stepping stone for the students’ future success and urged the invigilators to not encourage any students to cheat. The MCE expressed his admiration for the previous year’s achievements and expressed confidence that this year’s candidates will outperform their predecessors. He said that the best candidate would be awarded a scholarship.
