Twi, a dialect of the Akan language, is the predominant language spoken in Ghana. Due to this, many songs produced in the country are written in Twi, leading artists from various ethnicities to follow suit to reach a wider audience.
While music is a universal language, singing in Twi is often the first step for artists in Ghana to gain widespread acceptance.
This is why it may come as a surprise that some artists who heavily feature Twi in their songs are not actually from the Akan tribe.
In this article, Tru News Report has featured artists that are from the Ga tribe that you probably have no idea about.
1. Tinny
Tinny, without a doubt, stands as one of the most exceptional Ghanaian rappers in history. A few year ago, DJ Black, in his compilation of the 50 Greatest Ghanaian MCs of all time, ranked Tinny as the 10th best rapper.
Tinny showcases his lyrical prowess in both rapping and singing, predominantly in his native language Ga, while also having a few songs in Twi.
As one of Hammer of the Last 2’s HipLife soldiers, Tinny played a pivotal role in paving the way for other rappers to emerge. His birth name is Nii Addo Quaynor, and he has an impressive repertoire of hit tracks to his name, although his career experienced a decline at a certain point.
2. Mr Drew
Mr Drew, whose real name is Andrew Nii Commey Otoo, has claimed in the past that he is one of the top artiste in Ghana and he is not wrong. Despite his rising fame relatively not too long ago, Mr Drew expressed concerns that his financial situation does not reflect his popularity. He attributed this discrepancy to the impact of COVID-19, stating that the global pandemic had negatively affected his career just when he was experiencing success.
3. Joe Mettle
Joseph Oscar Nii Armah, who goes by the stage name Joe Mettle, is a renowned gospel singer and songwriter from Ghana.
He made history by becoming the first Gospel artist to win the VGMA Artist of the Year award in his genre on April 8, 2017. Joe Mettle has received numerous accolades not only in Ghana but also in various other countries.
Recently, his fellow Gospel artist, Patience Nyarko, criticized him by claiming that he is overhyped and does not deserve the high praise he often receives. Nyarko argued that Joe Mettle lacks a sufficient number of original songs in his repertoire.
4. Epixode
Epixode, a highly skilled Dancehall artist, possesses remarkable talent. Regrettably, the industry has yet to recognize his exceptional versatility, making him one of the most underrated artists of our era.
Epixode, born Theophilus Nii Arday Otoo, has produced several hit songs that distinguish him as an outstanding artist.
His father serves as a civil servant, while his mother, alongside her twin sister, showcased their musical prowess as lead vocalists in the renowned traditional music groups Wulomei and KALIFI.
5. Shatta Wale
Undoubtedly, Shatta Wale requires no formal introduction. He holds the esteemed title of Africa’s most acclaimed Dancehall artist.
His collaborations with renowned Jamaican artists have further elevated his status. Notably, his inclusion in Beyonce’s Lion King: The Gift Album has significantly enhanced his reputation. This remarkable album also showcases the talents of other prominent African artists such as Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Burna Boy, and many more.
6. Nii Funny
Nii Funny is known for his expertise in the jama genre of music, which led to his breakthrough hit song, ‘Broken Heart,’ produced by Spanky. He received a nomination at the esteemed Vodafone Ghana Music Awards in 2015.
7. King Jerry
King Jerry’s hit track, ‘Sankofa’ also known as ‘Baaye’ is one of the biggest songs in the Ga Communities. This scorching banger has gained immense popularity and is currently dominating the airwaves on various digital TV stations nationwide.
8. Gasmilla
Gasmilla is known for being the pioneer of the globally acclaimed Ghanaian music and dance genre known as Azonto. Born Odartei Milla Lamptey, he is also recognized by his alias, International Fisherman. His popular tracks include Aboodatoi and Telemo.
9. King Promise
King Promise, despite emerging on the music scene fairly recently, has quickly become one of the top artists in Ghana. Known as Gregory Bortey Newman, he has gained a large following due to his impressive singing skills and iconic oversized sneakers that have become a part of his image. With numerous hit songs under his belt, he is a highly sought-after collaborator in the industry.
10. Darko Vibes
Paul Nii Amu Andrew Darko, known by his stage name Darkovibes, has swiftly made a name for himself in the entertainment industry. Not only is he a talented singer and songwriter, but he is also recognized for his fashion sense.
Darkovibes’ music can be described as experimental, as he skillfully combines elements of highlife, hip hop, and rap. He showcases his versatility by singing in Ga, Twi, and English. In 2018, his hit song ‘Stay Woke’ garnered attention and solidified his presence in the music scene. Currently, his latest track ‘Inna Song’ is gaining immense popularity throughout Ghana.
11. Cina Soul
Cina Soul, born Christie Quincyna Quarcoopome, gained recognition as a finalist in the 2014 Vodafone Ghana Music Icons competition.
Her captivating voice and talent for songwriting have won over numerous music enthusiasts in Ghana and beyond. Additionally, she made an appearance in KiDi’s ‘Sugar’ music video.
Speculations suggest that she may be romantically involved with the Lynx Entertainment leading artist. One of her standout tracks is ‘Ojorley.’
12. Wisa Greid
Wisa Gried is a renowned musician who has achieved great success with his hit songs. One of his most popular tracks is “Ekiki Me,” which gained even more popularity with the remix version featuring Sarkodie.
This song stands out as his biggest hit to date, along with a series of other successful tracks such as “Cocoa,” “Kpuu Kpaa,” “One Side,” and “Minste Bo.”
However, Wisa Gried also made headlines for a controversial incident that shocked the Ghanaian music industry and even gained attention worldwide.
During a live performance at Citi FM’s 2015 edition of ‘Decemba 2 Rememba’ held at the Accra International Conference Centre, Wisa Gried shocked the audience by stripping and exposing his manhood.
He further stirred controversy by rubbing his manhood against his female dancer on stage.
This incident created a significant uproar and remains one of the wildest stunts ever witnessed in the history of Ghanaian music, and perhaps even the entire world.
