An entire battalion of Special Forces has been sent to Bawku, in the Upper East Region, after three immigration officers were shot at and one of them was killed when they were trying to buy food outside of the police station.

Unknown gunmen opened fire and murdered Ghana Immigration Service personnel. According to 3news.com, he and two other police officers were attacked and are now battling for their lives at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital.

The men were ambushed on their way to Missiga on the evening of Monday, April 3, 2023, in the volatile neighbourhood, it is still not clear why the attackers did what they did. Some people have thought that the attack had something to do with the current conflict in Bawku. Reports have surfaced recently detailing how gunmen have often terrorised residents of Bawku, causing them to live in constant fear.

The Special Forces are there to strengthen safety and assist in the search for the murderers who have escaped arrest at this point.

In an interview on joynews’ am show on wednesday, the regional minister for the upper east Mr. Stephen yakubu stated that, “The government is helping us by dispatching special forces about a thousand of them to bawku… Both military and police camps are being set up already to house these military men. Some are already at Bawku… Camps are already being built to house these soldiers.”

“I can tell you that we are in control of the situation. Government is helping us otherwise it would have been worse than this,” he asaid.

Mr. Yakubu has called for anyone with knowledge of the event to share it with the government and the public. He claimed that the officials in Bawku are working around the clock to make arrests, even though none have been made as of now.

“No arrests have been made yet but the authorities are working within their capacity to make arrests he claims.” he added.
