Zoe Saldana’s victory at the 97th Academy Awards was supposed to be a triumphant moment, but her Best Supporting Actress win for Emilia Pérez has instead ignited conversations across the industry.
While her performance earned widespread acclaim, the film itself has been at the center of controversy.
Emilia Pérez tells the story of a cartel leader who undergoes gender-affirming surgery, a plotline that has drawn criticism for its portrayal of trans identity and Latin American culture.

Some argue that the film, despite its intentions, leaned into problematic stereotypes. Others defended its artistic approach, praising its attempt to shed light on themes of transformation and redemption.
Adding to the backlash, one of Saldaña’s co-stars, Karla Sofía Gascón, faced scrutiny over resurfaced social media posts containing racist and Islamophobic remarks.
The controversy surrounding Gascón’s past statements has only intensified debates over the film’s representation and the industry’s accountability.
Saldaña, however, has remained composed in the face of criticism. In her acceptance speech, she paid tribute to her Dominican roots and dedicated the award to her grandmother.
Later, she acknowledged the concerns raised about Emilia Pérez, stating, “It was never our intention to offend, but to tell a story about identity, resilience, and human connection.”
