The Head of New Media for the Dr Mahamudu Bawumia campaign team, Krobea Kwabena Asante has firmly informed DJ Azonto that he will not receive any money from the vice president as a result of his potential lawsuit, which claims that they used his song without permission.

According to him, if DJ Azonto has any concerns, he should approach the DJs who played his song during Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign events for his royalties.

He emphasized that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has not used anyone’s song in any of his official campaign videos.

Krobea Kwabena Asante, in a social media post, stated that if any artist has issues, they should address them to the hired DJs who work on the campaign grounds.

He mentioned that they are well-versed in copyright and intellectual property laws and will engage with any artist if necessary.

This statement was made shortly after Fa Ne Fom hitmaker, DJ Azonto filed a lawsuit against Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for unauthorized use of his song during a political rally.

Dr Bawumia, the Vice President of Ghana and current flagbearer of the NPP, was captured in a viral video campaigning in various parts of the country.

In a press release dated May 16, 2024, DJ Azonto stated that he was not approached for permission before the song was used at the campaign event.

As a result, he is seeking $10 million in compensation. The musician argues that failure to pay would demonstrate a lack of respect for intellectual property rights.

Dr. Bawumia does not use anyone’s song for his campaign. Again, he has not used anyone’s song in any official video of his campaign.

1. The spinners (DJs) are independent contractors whose performances are not controlled by Dr. Bawumia or his team.

2. The copyright laws of Ghana impose obligations on operators of spinning machines (DJs) to pay royalties for their public performances. This obligation is not imposed on the Ghanaian public who engage their services. It is for the reason that the right holders of musical works and collective management organisations collect royalties from operators of spinning machines.

We know the copyright law and will engage composers where and when necessary and shall not violate any copyright law.

Cheers .
