Why Should I Protest When NDC is Promising to Allow Mining? W’agyimi Anaa? – DJ Slim Criticizes Anti-Galamsey Demonstrations

Popular media personality DJ Slim has stirred a heated conversation online, expressing his scepticism about the motives behind recent protests against illegal mining in Ghana.

Taking to X, DJ Slim questioned the logic of demonstrating against illegal mining while accusing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of making promises to mining communities that could potentially encourage galamsey (illegal mining) if they return to power.

In his pointed post, DJ Slim wrote, “The NDC, which is the major opposition party, is in the mining areas promising people that they will allow them to mine if they come to power, and you want me to walk from Okponglo to Circle protesting against illegal mining? Ah! W’agyimi anaa?” (“Ah! Are you foolish or what?”)

His remarks highlight his frustration with the perceived hypocrisy in the ongoing discourse around galamsey. While anti-illegal mining protests continue, DJ Slim’s comment suggests that political promises to permit mining activities might undermine the very efforts to curtail illegal practices that damage the environment.

DJ Slim’s post has sparked a variety of reactions from the public, with some supporting his viewpoint, citing that political interests often play a significant role in such matters. Others have criticized his stance, arguing that public demonstrations are essential in holding the government accountable for environmental issues, regardless of what political promises are being made.

The protests against galamsey have become a central topic in Ghana’s national conversation, especially with growing concerns about the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining activities.

As the 2024 general elections approach, DJ Slim’s comment taps into a broader debate about whether political parties are genuinely committed to ending illegal mining or merely using it as a campaign tool to win votes in key mining areas.

His remarks also point to the challenge faced by many Ghanaians who feel that the battle against galamsey is often politicized, with different political parties taking varying stances depending on their position in power.

As the discourse continues, it remains to be seen how DJ Slim’s criticism will influence the larger conversation about galamsey and the actions of both the government and the opposition in addressing this pressing national issue.
