The Attorney General and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) have come under fire from Ghanaian comedian Sadik Sulley, commonly referred to as SDK, for their decision to ban celebrities from promoting alcohol in the nation.
The suit against the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for banning celebrities from the promotion of alcoholic beverages is set to be heard by Supreme Court of Ghana today, November 15, 2023.
SDK does not think it is necessary to take such drastic measures against celebrities, who in his view have the right to work with whichever company they want to promote.
The comedian raised a query on the rationale behind the FDA and the Attorney General’s decision to prohibit celebrities from participating in such advertising, whereas American rapper Drake is permitted to endorse alcoholic beverages inside the nation.
“Good one. I will try my best to be there……I don’t know why you will ban influencers and celebs not to advertise for alcohol brands but Drake gets to advertise his drinks here in Ghana….” he wrote.
The prohibition of celebrities from advertising alcoholic beverages by the FDA was implemented with the intention of protecting children from any misconceptions that might occur from celebrity endorsements, therefore discouraging the perception that alcohol use is good.
