Why Sarpong’s Appointment to GRA Is Causing an Uproar Among NDC Supporters

The appointment of Anthony K. Sarpong as Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) by President John Dramani Mahama has sparked intense controversy among some factions of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

A group called NDC Loyalists Against Injustice has publicly expressed their discontent, accusing the President of favouring someone with strong ties to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) over loyal NDC members who have contributed significantly to the party’s success.

Below are the key reasons behind their dissatisfaction with this appointment.

1. Connection to the Opposition
Anthony K. Sarpong’s known affiliation with the NPP has raised red flags within the NDC. His appointment to serve on the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) by President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2020 is cited as evidence of his strong ties to the opposition party. Loyal NDC supporters argue that such an individual should not be trusted with a key role in the administration of the GRA.

2. Overlooked NDC Loyalists
The NDC Loyalists Against Injustice group is disappointed that experienced and committed members of the NDC, who worked tirelessly to secure the party’s victory in the 2024 elections, were bypassed for this prestigious role. They believe that people who have long been devoted to the party should be the ones rewarded with such appointments.

3. The Case of Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah
Another concern raised was the appointment of individuals with known NPP affiliations to significant positions. Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, a former NPP sympathizer, was also appointed to lead the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). This pattern has only fueled concerns about the political appointments being skewed in favor of those with ties to the opposition.

4. The Call for Change
In their press release, the NDC loyalists expressed their shock and disappointment over Sarpong’s appointment. They have demanded that President Mahama immediately reverse the decision or face public protests from party supporters. The group argues that there are more deserving NDC members who have proven their loyalty and commitment to the party.

5. Preserving the Trust of the NDC Supporters
The NDC Loyalists Against Injustice have also emphasized the importance of maintaining the trust of the party’s base. While they acknowledge the President’s other positive appointments, they believe that overlooking loyal NDC members for such significant roles undermines the collective effort that brought the party to power in 2024.
