Why I Played Free Shows For Vodafone For One Year – Guru Recounts Terrible Ordeal

Ghanaian rapper Guru has shared the story of how his manager’s betrayal and greed had a devastating impact on his career.

He explained that Vodafone, now Telecel Ghana, punished him for breaching his contract by giving him a choice between facing a lawsuit or performing free shows for an entire year.

During his prime, when Guru was consistently releasing hit songs, Vodafone approached him and his team with an offer to purchase his popular track, Lapaz Toyota.

The deal was completed, and Guru received a substantial payment for it. However, unbeknownst to him, his manager secretly sold the same song to MTN, which violated their agreement with Vodafone.

As a consequence, Vodafone demanded retribution and proposed that Guru make amends by performing at their sponsored outdoor events for free throughout the year. This was intended to serve as a punishment for his manager’s actions and the breach of trust.

“I’ll be at Tamale and I will be told that I have a show the following day when I have already been booked for a different show and making money The story I am telling you, might seem like a joke but it was my reality,” Guru told Fiifi Praat on Kingdom Plus FM.
