Rema has expressed concern about the lack of recognition for his significant contributions to Afrobeats, despite his relatively short time in the industry.
The Nigerian artist, widely known for his hit song “Calm Down,” noted that prominent figures in the music scene often fail to acknowledge his achievements or elevate his status to their level.
In response, Rema has taken it upon himself to highlight his accomplishments, emphasizing that he pioneered the EP format, which has since been adopted by other artists.
“When I came into the game, I brought a template. The way new artists come and dominate was different with me. I started the EP trend. Every [new Afrobeats] artist since 2019 has followed that path—when you come out, you drop an EP,” Rema explained during an interview on The Breakfast Club.

Rema added that many people are reluctant to recognize his contributions, which makes him feel the need to highlight them himself.
“A lot of people would argue [my role in shaping Afrobeats]. I don’t like to feel like the Afrobeats Messiah.
“Sometimes, people don’t like young people praising themselves. Sometimes, it’s not for you to say. Even if it’s the truth, it’s just not for you to say.
“Sometimes, I wait for the OGs to say it, but since no one is saying it, I might have to say it myself,” he concluded.
