Blakk Rasta has questioned the relevance of Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations, arguing that the day has lost its true meaning.
Speaking on Urban Blend on 3FM, he supported former President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to cancel the rotational celebration of the event, stressing that the funds could be used for more impactful projects.
“The president has come to tell us that the Independence Day celebration costs us a lot of money every time we move outside to rotate the celebration in the various regional capitals.
Do you know how many boreholes and classrooms the money we spent on various celebrations could have constructed? I applaud the president,” he stated.
Beyond the cost implications, Blakk Rasta questioned whether Ghanaians truly reflect on the significance of independence, suggesting that the day is treated more as a holiday than a moment for national introspection.
“What is the importance of celebrating independence every year when the people are not learning anything from their independence?
How many people understand why independence is even celebrated? Ghanaians are more interested in the holiday than the essence of the birthday of Ghana.
“When it’s 6th March, everybody is looking forward to where they can sleep at home, travel around, or go to the beach and just rest.
“It is not a day to reflect on the priorities, history, and legacy of this country,” he lamented.
