Ghana’s newly inaugurated president, John Dramani Mahama, has become the subject of lighthearted banter on social media after a slip of the tongue during his swearing-in ceremony at the Black Star Square in Accra.
While acknowledging the dignitaries present, Mahama inadvertently referred to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as “the president of the Federal Republic of Ghana.”
The moment unfolded as Mahama addressed the crowd, saying, “Your Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, president of the Federal Republic of Ghana.”
Though brief, the error quickly became a trending topic, with many Nigerians humorously offering to “lend” their president to Ghana.

The incident comes on the heels of Mahama’s decisive victory in the 2024 elections, where he defeated the New Patriotic Party’s candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to reclaim the presidency.
Mahama’s inauguration, a historic occasion that also saw Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang sworn in as Ghana’s first female vice president, attracted numerous local and international dignitaries, including President Tinubu himself.
