The Kantamanto market fire, which has left countless traders in shock and financial ruin, is now at the centre of a political controversy.
Ekow Vincent Assafuah, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, has raised serious allegations, claiming that the blaze was deliberately set with political motivations.
In a recent interview on Asempa FM, Assafuah pointed the finger at a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), suggesting that the fire was more than just an accident.
“After conducting my own investigation, it’s evident that those who caused the fire were determined to destroy everything in their path.
They made sure it would be nearly impossible for anyone, including the Fire Service, to salvage any of the goods,” Assafuah revealed.

His words indicated a calculated effort to cause irreparable damage, ensuring that there was no hope of recovery for the traders affected.
The Deputy Minister identified Quaicoo, a polling station agent for the NDC in the Odododiodoo constituency, as a key figure in the incident.
Quaicoo, also known as Oboy, had allegedly made concerning statements about the market both before and after the elections.
“This gentleman, before and after the elections, was giving signals. He even said to me, ‘As for Kantamanto, we will all lose it,’” Assafuah disclosed, emphasizing that Quaicoo had repeated this ominous statement to others in the market.
According to Assafuah, these remarks hint at a deliberate attempt to sabotage the market, with political grievances at the heart of it.
