Rapper Kojo Cue has stirred up controversy with a recent social media post, challenging a longstanding tradition that holds the elderly in high regard.
He argues that irrespective of their societal standing, older people are granted respect by default, which he believes has contributed to various issues faced by Ghanaians across different sectors.
This statement was made in response to a discussion initiated by Ghanaian influencer Gisela Amponsah, who referred to her father as a demon in a forthcoming podcast titled Rants, Bants and Confessions.
Kojo contends that the backlash directed at Gisela stems from the entrenched belief that elders deserve respect regardless of their actions.
An extract from Gisela’s ‘rants’ which informed Cue’s decision reads;
“I don’t even want to talk about that man because I don’t want to give him the clout. I have never rated him.
“I’m very disrespectful towards my dad, and I am not even going to shy away from it. I respect and love my mom so much, but for my dad, I don’t even think he exists.
“I don’t like talking about him because he is a demon. When I say men are trash, it starts from him,” she stated without mincing words.
In reaction to the bashing Gisela got owing to the foregoing, Kojo Cue said;
“All of our problems in this country are rooted in how we are socialised to give adults respect and grace no matter what they do. Everything that is messed up has its roots in this automatic respect for elders,” he stated.
“People are raped by uncles and aunties and expected to live under the same roof with them as well as respect them. You want respect so much but you won’t respect yourself?” Kojo Cue noted.
