A video of the late Onyeka Onwenu’s last performance has been shared online, following her passing on July 30, 2024.
She had just performed at the 80th birthday celebration of pharmaceutical tycoon Mrs. Stella Okoli, where she interacted with politician Peter Obi during her act.
The video captures Onwenu in high spirits, delighting the audience with her melodious tunes.
There were no signs of any health issues or impending tragedy during her performance.
Tragically, she collapsed after her set and was swiftly taken to Reddington Hospital in Lagos for medical attention.
Onwenu made her film debut portraying Joke, a woman without children who takes in an abandoned infant, in Zik Zulu Okafor’s Nightmare. Since then, she has appeared in a variety of Nollywood films.
In 2006, she received the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her work in “Widow’s Cot.”
That same year, she was also nominated for the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role in “Rising Moon.”
In 2014, she starred in Half of a Yellow Sun alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor and Thandiwe Newton, and she was featured in Lion Heart in 2018.
