Mark Margolis has died at the age of 83, his family has announced. According to a statement from the performer’s family, the musician “passed away following a short illness” on Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Mark Margolis was an American actor. An actor since he was a teenager, late in his career, he became most known for portraying Hector Salamanca in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
His wife Jacqueline and son Morgan were by his bedside as he passed away. Margolis starred in more than 100 TV shows and motion pictures, such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Scarface.
However, he was arguably most recognized for his role as Hector Salamanca in the television series Breaking Bad. In this role, he played a wheelchair-bound crime leader who could only communicate by ringing a bell similar to that found in a hotel lobby.
Margolis, who was nominated for a best guest actor Emmy in 2012 for his performance in the series, later reprised the role in the Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul.
He also received acclaim for playing a Sicilian mob boss infected with HIV in prison drama Oz.
Margolis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Margolis. He is the son of Fanya and Isidore Margolis. He was raised in a Jewish household. Prior to leaving Temple University and relocating to New York City, Margolis attended there for a brief period of time.
He studied at the Actors Studio under Stella Adler when he was 19 years old. Later, Lee Strasberg and Barbara Loden tutored him as well. For his supporting parts in the films of Darren Aronofsky, including (1998), Requiem for a Dream (2000), The Fountain (2006), The Wrestler (2008), Black Swan (2010), and Noah (2014), Margolis is renowned.
In 2012, his work on the television series Breaking Bad earned him an Emmy nomination. He frequently played supporting roles in director Darren Aronofsky’s movies, making appearances in all but two of them. He also starred in Aronofsky’s debut picture, Pi (1998). He was also well-known for his roles as Antonio Nappa in Oz and Alberto “The Shadow” in Scarface.
