US Court Rules in Favour of Anas, Awards $18M in Defamation Suit Against Agyapong

Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has been awarded $18 million in damages by an Essex County jury in the United States after successfully suing former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, for defamation.

The legal victory comes years after Agyapong’s 2018 public outburst, where he accused Anas of being “a blackmailer, corrupt, an extortionist, and evil” during a live television interview.

The MP also circulated materials aimed at tarnishing the journalist’s reputation following Anas’ corruption investigations.

Despite Anas’ efforts to seek justice in Ghana’s courts, his GH¢25 million lawsuit was dismissed in 2023 by an Accra High Court, which ruled that while Agyapong’s comments could be defamatory, Anas had failed to prove his case.

The U.S. ruling, however, has taken a different turn, holding Agyapong financially accountable for the damage caused.

Legal expert Professor Kwaku Azar shared the update, revealing that Agyapong has since requested a remittitur, seeking a reduction in the awarded damages.
