In a controversial decision, US President Donald Trump has revoked the security clearances of several high-profile political figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and other critics.
The announcement, made on March 22, 2025, also impacts individuals such as former Secretary of State Antony Blinken, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, and former Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco.
Trump’s directive extends beyond current and former Democratic officials. It also targets key Republicans who have opposed him, such as former Representatives Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney.
Additionally, legal figures involved in cases against Trump, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, have had their access to classified information rescinded.
According to the presidential memorandum, all executive departments and agencies have been instructed to immediately revoke any active security clearances held by these individuals.
The order also prevents them from receiving classified briefings or accessing secure government facilities. While it is common for former presidents and top officials to retain some level of security access for advisory purposes, this decision marks a sharp departure from tradition.
Critics argue that the move is politically motivated and a continuation of Trump’s history of targeting his opponents.
Many view it as retaliation for past investigations and challenges to his leadership. On the other hand, Trump’s supporters defend the action as a necessary step to protect national security and prevent former officials from accessing sensitive intelligence.
This development follows a similar move by President Joe Biden in 2021 when he blocked Trump from receiving intelligence briefings due to concerns about his conduct.
