Today In History: 9 Years After Castro’s Disappearance

Today marks exactly 9 years since Hiplife star Castro disappeared mysteriously.

According to reports, one Janet Badu and the renowned Hiplife musician both died in drowning accidents on Sunday, July 6, 2014, at a beach in Ada. The terrible occurrence happened while the victims were on holiday with pals, including former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan. Castro was ruled legally dead on July 6, 2021, seven years after his disappearance, even though his body was never found.

The news of Castro’s death was published by GhanaWeb at that time thus;

Theophilus Tagoe, nicknamed CASTRO, a well-known hip-hop artist, has reportedly passed away, according to reports that reached GhanaWeb Entertainment Desk. Although details surrounding Castro’s unexpected death are still vague, it is commonly accepted that his ski boat, which was reported to be carrying his girlfriend at the time, flipped in strong surf.

The renowned musician, who was vacationing at the Aqua Safari Resort in Ada with Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan since Saturday, is said to have drowned on Sunday morning, according to Starr Fm. While the others continued to unwind at the shore, Castro was rumoured to have taken one of the boats out on a cruise on the Volta Lake with his lover.

According to the accounts, Castro tried to save the woman when she abruptly fell into the lake while not wearing a life jacket. According to the sources, the ski boat left them in the water as Castro tried to save the woman. However, no one has yet found the woman’s body. Independent verification has not been done of the reports.

Who is Castro?

Theophilus Tagoe, aka CASTRO who hails from Takoradi, was born in 1982 to Lydia Tagoe, a trader, and Mr Coffie, an accountant at the Takoradi Harbour. He attended Anglican Primary and J.S.S in Takoradi.

Among the accolades that he won for himself, the most current one was the 2014 VGMAs award winner for Highlife Song of the Year for the song “Odo Pa”.

“Castro-the Destroyer” as he was fondly called will be remembered for his last current hit song, “Odo Pa” which features Asamoah ‘Baby Jet’ Djan and Kofi Kinaata, and his master class collaboration with Sarkodie on “Adonai”.

He started singing at the tender age of 10. Before he launched his debut album in 2003, he had features on the hip-life group 4×4 hit track, “Sikletele” which officially introduced him to the local music scene. Just like his current album, “Sradinam” in no time became one of the favourite hits for many Ghanaians.

Later he proved his superiority when he was featured on the beat maker, J-Q of Q-Lex promotion’s compilation which also featured great rappers like, Buk Bak, 4X4, and Pope Skinny.

And then later, with Okra, Obrafour, Kwaw Kese, Dogo and others, they came out with Execution Diary under the execution record label

Just before his hit song “Toffee”, Castro had given learnt his voice to Buk Bak’s album which also made a great impact in the music arena. His dream was to retire and become a producer. His vision was to help bring talented hidden young artiste to the limelight. He believes that by becoming a producer, he would tap the young talented artists and groom them for the market.
