Content creator Kelvin Sampane Addo, widely known as Akonoba, has opened up about the financial realities of his career as a social media influencer.

In an interview with Deloris Frimpong Manso on The Delay Show, Akonoba discussed how his viral characters on platforms like TikTok, while beloved by fans, do not bring in any income.

The popular content creator, famous for his portrayal of various characters including an elderly woman, revealed that his social media sketches are more about providing entertainment than making money.

“The characters I play on social media don’t bring in any money, especially the old woman character,” Akonoba admitted.

“I act in those skirts to entertain my viewers, especially elderly people abroad who may be dealing with depression. TikTok doesn’t pay me. But when I wear wigs and clothes for some companies, I get paid for that.”

Akonoba’s humorous skits often feature him in traditional, exaggerated roles, drawing millions of views.

However, despite his growing fanbase, the financial side of social media content creation remains a challenge.

Unlike some of his peers who profit directly from platforms like TikTok through monetization options, Akonoba has yet to tap into those opportunities, particularly through TikTok, which doesn’t pay him for his content.

Instead, Akonoba relies on brand partnerships to generate income. “When I wear wigs and clothes for some companies, I get paid for that,” he shared, highlighting how working with brands in the fashion and beauty industry is his primary source of income.

His collaborations with companies for sponsored content allow him to balance his passion for creating content with the need to make a living.

Despite these challenges, Akonoba remains committed to his craft. He emphasized that his elderly woman character, which resonates deeply with his viewers, especially older audiences abroad, is an act of love and service.

“I want to make them laugh and forget their troubles, especially those dealing with depression,” he explained. The heartwarming motivation behind his character’s creation shows Akonoba’s deep connection to his audience, and his desire to use humor as a tool for healing.
