The Roads and Highways Minister-designate, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has raised alarm over Ghana’s ballooning road sector debt, warning of its dire implications for national development.
During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 20, 2025, Agbodza painted a grim picture of the sector’s financial state, emphasizing the unsustainable trajectory of debt accumulation and interest payments.
“In 2018, we owed about GHC113 million; the interest on the GHC113 million this year will be GHC665 million,” he revealed, his voice tinged with frustration.
“The debt was 113; the interest on the 113 is 665. The question is how do I explain to the taxpayers in Adaklu that we owe GHC113 million, yet the interest on that amount is GHC665 million?!”
He expressed concern that such conditions not only strain the nation’s coffers but also disincentivize contractors.
“This cannot continue. Contractors delivering projects under such conditions are not only financially constrained but also disincentivized,” he said.
