The World Is Hard, But Nigeria Is Harder- Timaya

Nigerian music star Timaya has opened up about the harsh economic realities affecting not only everyday citizens but also those in the entertainment industry.

In an interview with Channels TV, the artist shared his personal experiences and expressed empathy for the struggles many Nigerians are facing, as the cost of living continues to rise sharply.

“Things are really hard. I feel it for people because if people are not happy, I can’t be happy, too,” Timaya began, reflecting on the current state of the economy. His own experience as a provider for his family, staff, and others has made him acutely aware of the difficulties people are enduring.

As a public figure who supports numerous individuals, Timaya spoke about how the increasing financial strain is affecting even those with higher incomes. “I pay bills. I help a lot of people. So I understand what people are going through. I’m also feeling it [the hardship],” he added.

The rising cost of living has particularly impacted his responsibilities toward his staff and family members. Timaya noted that the salaries and general upkeep for those under his care have dramatically increased. This financial burden is exacerbated by the broader economic challenges facing Nigeria, where inflation and currency depreciation have made it even harder to make ends meet.

“You don’t expect things to be normal,” he said, emphasizing that the current situation has affected everyone, including politicians. He added, “Even politicians are crying, too, not to talk of me.” The artist pointed out that the only way to navigate the escalating costs is through earning foreign currency.

“The only way you can meet up with the current economic demands is if you’re earning in dollars. If you’re earning forex and you convert it to naira, that’s how you can ball,” Timaya explained, offering insight into how those in entertainment or business can somewhat cushion the economic blows by dealing in foreign exchange.

However, Timaya was quick to note that financial difficulties are not unique to Nigeria. He drew a comparison between the Nigerian and American economies, stating that even in countries like the U.S., people are struggling despite earning in stronger currencies.

“Even in America right now, things are still hard there because they’re earning in dollars and spending in dollars. It’s hard everywhere,” he remarked, while pointing out that Nigeria’s economic situation is even more severe. “The world is hard right now, but Nigeria is harder.”
