The Toxicology Report Is In, We’re Moving Forward — Lagos AG Assures Public on Mohbad Investigation

It had been over a year since the tragic passing of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, better known as Mohbad, and yet the community still waited, hearts heavy, for answers. The journey to justice, especially in high-profile cases like this, can be as slow as it is painful, and the twists along the way often leave loved ones searching for clarity.

On October 21, 2024, Lagos State Attorney General Lawal Pedro stood before a crowd of reporters, breaking the long-awaited news. The toxicology report from the United States had finally arrived. The room fell into silence as he spoke, acknowledging the delays that had haunted the case and, with them, the public’s patience.

“I understand the frustration,” Pedro began, glancing around the room. “The time taken for the investigation has not been lost on us. But thorough investigations, especially forensic analyses like this, require time to ensure we present a case that will stand in court.”

Pedro wasn’t new to such scenarios. In his position as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, he had learned that justice, while a powerful concept, isn’t a sprint. It’s a marathon, one where every step must be carefully considered, every piece of evidence meticulously examined. And in Mohbad’s case, the stakes were high.

The delays, Pedro explained, had not been intentional but were the result of the time-consuming nature of forensic processes. “We want to ensure that when this case is brought before the courts, we have all the evidence needed for a conviction,” he added, his tone firm but empathetic. “Every analysis, every test is essential to building a strong case.”

The tragedy that befell Mohbad was a wound in Nigeria’s music community, and it deepened when the Lagos DNA and Forensic Centre was destroyed during the 2020 #EndSARS protests. That facility, crucial for processing evidence and conducting thorough investigations, had to be rebuilt from the ground up. This forced the state to outsource forensic testing, including Mohbad’s toxicology report, to the United States, leading to more delays.

Pedro emphasized that the destruction of the forensic centre was not just a logistical setback but a symbol of the broader challenges facing Nigeria’s justice system. Yet, despite these hurdles, he assured the public that the case was moving forward. “We are as committed to finding the truth as you are,” he said, his voice steady.

For the friends and fans of Mohbad, the wait has been excruciating. But Pedro’s words offered some solace, a reminder that while the wheels of justice may turn slowly, they do turn.

The toxicology report, now in the hands of the Lagos State Pathologist and the coroner magistrate, is a critical piece in the puzzle. It represents hope—a hope that the truth about Mohbad’s untimely death will finally be revealed.

As the press conference wrapped up, Pedro left the room with a final thought. “Justice may be delayed, but it will not be denied.”

In a city like Lagos, where life moves at a rapid pace, sometimes it’s easy to forget that justice takes its time. But for Mohbad, his family, and his fans, every step in the process brings them closer to the answers they seek. And for those watching from the sidelines, it’s a reminder that in the pursuit of justice, patience is not just a virtue—it’s a necessity.
