Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo has addressed reports of petitions calling for her removal, asserting that competence is what sustains a leader in any position.
Speaking at a Women in Leadership forum, she stated, “It is competence that sustains or strengthens an individual’s position, regardless of their role.” She acknowledged that many within her professional circle have commended her for maintaining her composure despite the ongoing petition for her removal, adding that she remains unshaken by the situation.
Her remarks follow President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to consult the Council of State after receiving three petitions requesting her removal.
Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed that Mahama has formally referred the petitions to the Council, as mandated by Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which governs the process of removing a Chief Justice.
While details of the petitions remain undisclosed, the Chief Justice subtly reminded the public that any action taken against her must be legally justified. “The law is clear on what must be done. I remain committed to my duty,” she stated.
The Council of State is now expected to review the petitions and advise the President on the appropriate course of action. This development signals a potentially significant shift in Ghana’s judiciary, depending on the Council’s recommendations.
