Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, recently called on African leaders to embrace technology as a key driver of the continent’s development.
Speaking at the 27th Annual Conference at Harvard University, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that Africa’s future depends on adopting a forward-thinking approach to digital transformation.
“Africa must act with a mindset of possibilities. We should embrace technology and not be intimidated by it,” he stated, encouraging policymakers to see digitalization as a tool for progress.
He pointed out that Africa has the potential to leapfrog more developed nations in several areas if it harnesses the power of technology effectively.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted that Africa is currently building a formal, data-driven economy to compete in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
“Our challenge is to use digitalization to solve current problems while laying the foundation for future jobs,” he said. He stressed that this transition is crucial for economic growth and job creation across the continent.
He also noted the importance of creating formal systems that are based on data, which would help African countries address key issues like unemployment, healthcare, and education. By leveraging digital tools, African nations can improve governance and attract global investments.
