Jamaican reggae artist Hezron has sparked a heated debate in the Ghanaian music industry after commenting on the authenticity of the Dancehall music scene in Ghana.
Speaking at the press launch for his Man on a Mission African Tour concert at VinesSplash Music Studios in Accra, Hezron expressed his views on the local Dancehall movement, stating that the genre being produced in Ghana doesn’t truly reflect the roots of Jamaican Dancehall.
In a candid interview, Hezron remarked, “I can say that Ghana’s Dancehall music isn’t authentic because what we know in Jamaica isn’t what they are doing here. However, what they are doing is how they represent themselves, and their truest expression.”
While he acknowledged the unique spin that Ghanaian artists put on the genre, Hezron made it clear that he believed there was a distinct difference between local interpretations and the original Jamaican style of Dancehall.
Hezron went on to explain that he didn’t expect Ghanaian artists to replicate Jamaican Dancehall exactly, as “they aren’t Jamaicans.”
He emphasized that the African influence on the genre was not a problem, but rather, he encouraged local artists to deepen their understanding of the genre’s foundational elements.
“I love that Africans and Ghanaians are doing it but they need to understand the tips, the language, and the style as well,” he said, acknowledging the cultural contributions of Africa to the global music scene.
As a Jamaican native, Hezron’s perspective comes from a place of authority, having grown up surrounded by Dancehall’s cultural roots.
He explained, “I’m from a Dancehall country so I can tell what is real and not.”
His words have ignited a conversation about the evolving nature of Dancehall, with many Ghanaians defending their version of the genre as a unique blend of local culture and Jamaican influences.
The comments have drawn mixed reactions from fans and artists alike.
