The Comparisons to 2Baba Almost Broke Me Down — Joe El

Nigerian singer Joe El Amadi has opened up about the challenges he’s faced throughout his career, all due to an unintentional resemblance to legendary artist 2Baba.

While being compared to a well-established icon might seem like a compliment, Joe El revealed how the comparisons nearly broke him, as some industry insiders went to lengths to exclude him because of his likeness to 2Baba.

Joe El recounted instances that tested his resolve, particularly with certain influential figures actively barring him from platforms simply because of his appearance.

He recalled an experience at Cool FM where a presenter refused to interview him, saying they “can’t interview someone who imitates 2Face.”

At Sound City, a presenter confronted him at Club Rumours, boasting that he had banned Joe El’s songs from being played on the station for the same reason.

“The downsides of 2Baba comparisons almost broke me down,” Joe El admitted, adding that the blow to his career was even more painful at the 2013 Festac Carnival.

Despite his hard work and talent, the event planner insisted he couldn’t perform, claiming the spot was reserved for “their King, 2Face.”

Though the exclusion stung, Joe El confided in his family and mentors during these trying times, seeking guidance and support. His mother and his record label boss, Baba Keke, urged him to stay calm, advising him to remain focused on his journey despite the setbacks.

“I complained to my mum and my record label boss… they urged me to be calm,” he shared, reflecting on the emotional toll the comparisons took on him.

Even paying homage to 2Baba was often discouraged; on multiple occasions, Joe El recalled being blocked by 2Baba’s team when he approached to show respect.

Although his resemblance to 2Baba initially opened doors, Joe El’s story is a reminder of the struggles that come with being in someone else’s shadow in an industry that often focuses more on appearances than on talent.

Now, as Joe El continues to pave his way, he hopes that sharing his story will bring awareness to the pressures and struggles he’s endured, hoping to be seen for who he truly is as an artist.
