At the 95th Academy Awards, singer and songwriter Tems made a statement by donning a huge headgear that prevented audience members seated behind her from seeing the stage.
The Nigerian singer matched the headdress with a back-wrapped, puffy white gown from LA-based label Lever Couture.
She was nominated for Best Original Song for the song “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” but lost what could have been her first Oscar, to the soundtrack of the Bollywood hit “RRR.”
Tems looked ignorant of the effect her garment was having, but audience members noted a humorous moment when a woman seated behind the singer peered out from under the billowing headpiece in an attempt to view the performance. But admirers were quick to point out that those near Tem were uncomfortable and unable to see the show because of her extravagant headpiece.
Tems’ distinctive and daring wardrobe decision has helped her stand out at the star-studded event, despite the criticism, but there is no doubt that she has created a buzz in the entertainment industry. Some people criticized the performer for being “inconsiderate” to guests who had spent hundreds of dollars to attend the performance. Some also thought this was “disrespectful.”
TMZ also reported on Tems’ attire, noting that while those seated behind her were courteous, Twitter was not.
