On September 29, 2023, the world lost Hollywood legend Ron Ely, an actor who left an indelible mark on television.
Ely, best known for portraying Tarzan, died in Los Alamos, California. His daughter, Kirsten Casale Ely, shared the heartbreaking news, stating, “The world has lost one of its greatest men, and I have lost my father.”
Ely rose to fame in the 1960s, embodying the iconic shirtless character of Tarzan in the popular TV series, a role that would immortalize him for generations. His rugged charm and adventurous spirit became synonymous with the character, shaping the public’s image of the jungle hero—a legacy Disney would later amplify.
Despite his illustrious career, Ely’s later life was marked by a devastating tragedy. In 2019, his wife of over 30 years, Valerie Lundeen Ely, was brutally murdered at their Santa Barbara home.
The couple’s son, Cameron Ely, was identified as the assailant in the tragic incident. After the stabbing, Cameron was confronted by police, who fatally shot him on the scene. Ron Ely, who was present during the incident, contested the police’s actions, questioning the justification behind his son’s death.

“If Cameron didn’t have a weapon, what grounds did they have to shoot him?” Ely’s lawyer, John Burris, remarked in 2020, raising concerns about the legal basis for the fatal police action.
Ron Ely’s journey to love began during his time as the host of the Miss America pageant in the early 1980s, where he met Valerie Lundeen, a former Miss Florida.
The pair married in 1984, building a life together with their three children. By 2001, Ely decided to step away from the limelight, choosing to focus on his family after a successful career in Hollywood.
