Popular Ghanaian event MC, podcaster, and entertainment critic David Adjei Frimpong, known widely as MC Portfolio, has sparked a heated discussion in Ghana’s music industry with his recent comments on Grammy nominations.
During a conversation on Hitz, FM, MC Portfolio suggested that reggae artist Rocky Dawuni—celebrated for putting Ghana on the Grammy map with multiple nominations—may not be the best source for advice on achieving Grammy success.
He stated, “For the last five years, we’ve heard Rocky Dawuni tell the same story in interviews after his Grammy nods.
“While his recognition is a big deal for Ghana, we need to dig deeper than just his personal experiences to understand how to break through.”
According to Portfolio, Ghanaian musicians might benefit more by looking into the strategies used by Dawuni’s record label and his broader support team.
He emphasized that Grammy nominations often result from well-connected teams and strategic planning rather than individual effort alone.

MC Portfolio’s comments come at a time when Grammy aspirations have become a key focus for many Ghanaian artists, particularly in the Afrobeat, reggae, and dancehall genres.
While Rocky Dawuni has undoubtedly elevated Ghana’s presence on the Grammy stage, Portfolio argued that fans and artists alike might feel more energized by seeing stars like Stonebwoy receive a Grammy nod.
“Imagine the excitement in Ghana if someone like Stonebwoy got a Grammy nomination,” Portfolio noted. “It’s not about dismissing Rocky’s accomplishments, but our industry and fans want to see other major talents recognized as well.”
He highlighted Stonebwoy’s recurring presence in such discussions, especially when Grammy nominations are announced and his name is absent, despite his extensive contributions to Ghana’s music scene.
