In a country where the fight against illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, has become a national crisis, the highest legislative body cannot afford to turn a blind eye.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has issued a strong warning to Members of Parliament (MPs), making it clear that any legislator found engaging in galamsey will face dire consequences.
“Honourable members, galamsey must be confronted head-on. If any of you happen to be involved in galamsey, please advise yourself.

You must be prepared as a house to bite the bullet. We must lead and show the way. And please, if I get any information that any of you is involved in galamsey, we will start taking the necessary action from the House,” he declared while addressing the plenary on Tuesday, January 28.
His words, laced with both urgency and authority, reflect growing frustration over the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining.
Rivers that once provided clean water to communities are now poisoned with mercury, and vast tracts of arable land have been left barren due to reckless mining activities.
Despite numerous government interventions, the problem persists, often fueled by powerful individuals with political connections.
