The statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi has been toppled and destroyed by unknown individuals.
Reports indicate the incident occurred in the early hours of January 13, 2025, leaving the statue damaged from the head down to the knees.
Police sources confirmed they received a distress call about the act of vandalism and rushed to the scene. “By the time we got there, the damage had already been done,” an officer told Graphic Online’s Moses Dotsey Aklorbortu.
This marks the second time the statue has been subjected to damage. Originally unveiled on November 6, 2024, to honour the former president, the statue faced its first challenge in December 2024 when a large hole appeared in the back of one of its legs.
While that incident led to repairs, speculation swirled around the cause, with some locals attributing it to deliberate vandalism and others suspecting structural flaws.
Now completely destroyed, the statue’s fate has reignited conversations about its durability, symbolism, and the motives behind the repeated attacks.
The authorities are investigating the incident, but for now, the once-proud symbol of homage stands in ruins, stirring questions and concerns across Sekondi.
