‘Squid Game: ‘The Challenge’ Contestants Threaten Lawsuit Against Netflix

Two potential plaintiffs, represented by a British personal injury law firm, allege that they experienced these health issues while shooting in cold conditions in the UK. The law firm has sent letters to Studio Lambert and The Garden, the co-producers of Netflix’s “Squid Game: The Challenge,” which is a British game show where 456 contestants compete for a cash prize of $4.56 million, the largest ever in reality TV history.

In response to these allegations, a representative for Netflix, Studio Lambert, and The Garden stated that no lawsuit has been filed by any of the Squid Game contestants and emphasized their commitment to the welfare of the contestants.

The show, inspired by Netflix’s South Korean drama series “Squid Games,” follows 456 players facing financial hardship as they risk their lives in deadly children’s games for a chance to win a substantial cash prize.

The contestants’ concerns primarily revolve around the show’s opening game, “Red Light, Green Light,” where players must avoid detection by a robotic doll by freezing in position.

Filmed at Cardington Studios in England during a cold snap, some contestants reportedly collapsed after playing the game for six hours in freezing temperatures. One contestant expressed their dissatisfaction, stating that the experience was no longer enjoyable and critiquing the inadequate clothing provided for such conditions.

“It’s not like we signed up for ‘Survivor’ or ‘Naked and Afraid,’” another player said. “The conditions were absolutely inhumane and had nothing to do with the game.”

Contestants complained about the restrictions on warm clothing during the shoot, which were limited to the provided jumpsuits. Additionally, they were required to hold poses for extended periods of up to 20 minutes, despite being initially informed of a 2-minute limit. The early 3:30 a.m. wake-up calls and insufficient food provided by the studio after filming were also sources of discontent, with all participants experiencing exhaustion as a result.

Variety has received confirmation from Netflix that out of the 456 contestants, three individuals needed medical attention. In February, Deadline reported that the show underwent an independent safety inspection following the medical incidents that occurred on set. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in Britain, also known as HSE, conducted an investigation into the conditions and concluded that no additional measures were required.
