South African rapper Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, known professionally as AKA, was killed in a drive-by shooting on Florida Road, Durban, on Friday night, according to reports.
Police have confirmed that the 35-year-old as well as another person identified to be his close friend Tibz, have been shot dead. A third person also believed to be his bodyguard is wounded.
A report says AKA was standing outside the Wish restaurant when two unknown cars opened fire on him.
According to a social media post, as part of his birthday celebrations, AKA was scheduled to perform at Durban nightclub Hugo.
Police officials shut down the area following the incident since it was a high-traffic area for the city’s nightlife.
The reason for the shooting cannot be determined with certainty at this time.
For more than a decade after his debut, AKA has been one of South Africa’s most successful rappers. He has written and produced many songs that have become huge hits, such as “Fela in Versace” and “Baddest.”
