A South African church has set social media ablaze after a viral video showed worshippers openly drinking alcohol during service—with the full approval of their bishop.
This unconventional practice has left many shocked, while others argue it’s simply a new way of embracing faith.
The church in question, known as the Gabola Church, was founded by Bishop Tsietsi Makiti in 2017. Unlike traditional places of worship discouraging alcohol consumption, Gabola actively encourages it, allowing congregants to bring and enjoy their favorite drinks during sermons.
The church holds services in taverns and bars, reinforcing its belief that spirituality should be accessible to all, regardless of lifestyle choices.
Bishop Makiti has defended his church’s practices, stating that many religious institutions reject those who drink, making them feel unworthy of salvation. “We welcome those who have been cast out by society.
Here, you can drink and still be close to God,” he once stated. The church does not collect tithes or offerings, further setting it apart from mainstream religious organizations.
While supporters praise the church for its inclusivity, critics argue that mixing alcohol with worship sends the wrong message and disrespects religious principles.
The South African Council of Churches has refused to recognize Gabola, with many religious leaders condemning its approach.
Despite the controversy, Gabola Church continues to grow, attracting members from beyond South Africa, including countries like Canada, Germany, and Brazil.
Whether it is a revolutionary approach to faith or a step too far, one thing is certain—the debate is far from over.
